La Casa and La Maison Living-Learning Community
Join La Casa (Spanish) or La Maison (French) to immerse yourself in a vibrant community where you'll take courses in Spanish or French, supported by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. You will have access to resources and activities that enhance your learning experience.
Eligibility & Course Requirements
- Complete the Housing Contract & LLC and Interest Housing Application
- Be an active member of the community throughout the academic year
- Declared major in French or Spanish (this can be a double or dual major).
- Live in the designated La Casa and La Maison community
- Support/Attend Living-Learning Community events and programs
What You Will Experience:
- Courses in Spanish or French: Take classes that match your level in the Spanish or French major programs.
- High-Impact Practices: Engage in professional development, study abroad opportunities, language and culture immersion experiences, and faculty-mentored research.
- Community Events: Participate in the immersive passport program with events on and off campus, such as cultural festivals, language exchange meetups, and international film screenings.
- Academic, Social, and Community Activities: Get involved in a variety of activities, including cooking classes featuring traditional Spanish or French cuisine, volunteer opportunities with local cultural organizations, and conversation clubs to practice your language skills in a relaxed setting.
Expectations
- Declared major or minor in French or Spanish. Exploratory students considering the French or Spanish major may be considered, if space is available.
- Completion of the department-subsidized ACTFL-based placement test in the target language (French or Spanish). Students may contact gregory.helmick@unf.edu or dbellamy@unf.edu to arrange this online assessment.
- Residents of La Casa (Spanish) should demonstrate at least intermediate-level proficiency in Spanish on the placement test. Residents of La Maison (French) need only demonstrate strong interest in their French major or minor and articulate their time frame for degree completion.
Objectives
- Practice immersive language skills in the five key areas of reading, listening, speaking, writing, and intercultural communication) within a welcoming social and academic community
- Develop intercultural appreciation, global awareness and a sense of community among students, reinforcing ‘internationalization at home’
- Identify opportunities for faculty-mentored research opportunities, study abroad, and faculty-mentored Community-Based learning
- Participate in community based immersive experiences to support professional development and career planning relevant
- Opportunities to enhance leadership skills and demonstrate good citizenship
