Future Ospreys explore excellence at Hicks Honors College Day

On Jan. 24, approximately 400 high school students and their parents from across Florida attended the Hicks Honors College Day, aimed to provide already-admitted seniors with a better understanding of the College.

The Hicks Honors College at 成人AV视频, with its 950 students, stands as a beacon of academic excellence from freshmen year through graduation. It offers high-achieving students an enriched experience through research, experiential learning and service opportunities. Students come from diverse backgrounds and disciplines and are united in their dedication to excellence. In addition, Honors Residence Hall will open this fall, serving as a living-learning community for honor students.

The daylong event included a welcome from President Moez Limayem, a presentation by Hicks Honors College Interim Dean Dr. Scott Brown, a panel discussion with current honors students, course demonstrations, a campus tour and a resource fair.

Both Brown and Will Pewitt, associate instructor and assistant director of the Hicks Honors College, said the opportunity to interact and connect with prospective students and their families is invaluable.

“It’s important that prospective students hear directly from faculty and staff about the college experience,” said Brown.

During his presentation, Brown challenged attendees to use critical thinking skills to interpret the meaning of a specific work of art.

“We want prospective students to get an insight into what it means to think, debate, discuss and engage in college.”

Pewitt gave a demonstration of one of his courses, “Mythmaking: From Demeter to Disney.” He said that College Day serves as an opportunity to highlight the unique qualities of 成人AV视频 and the Honors program.

“Honors College Day allows students and their families to experience the hands-on, discussion-driven environment that defines Honors at 成人AV视频, reinforcing how our community’s focus on collaboration seeks to engage every major and any learning style,” Pewitt said.

Honors student and senior biology major Dakota Jacks, who served as a student panelist at this year's event, says attending Hicks Honors College Day as an incoming freshman was a memorable experience.

"This event was one of the reasons I joined the Hicks Honors College," said Jacks. "Being able to come back a few years later and share my experiences with new prospective students was a great opportunity."
